Hypnosis is simply getting into deep trance, which is a normal waking state that we experience 95% of the day. For example, you are in a trance whenever you drive, daydream, watch television or get engrossed in a book. Hollywood often depicts hypnosis as being a zombie-like state where you are controlled by someone else against your will. This is far from the truth.
