POSITIVE BODY IMAGE: TRAIN YOUR THOUGHTS TO THINK POSITIVE

Feeling great in your own skin and having a positive body image takes work! Did you know 44% of women will have negative feelings about their body. In order to stay positive you need to train your thoughts. Follow these five simple steps:

1. ACKNOWLEDGMENT

When a negative thought about your body or self-image comes to mind don’t ignore it. Stop and acknowledge that it is there so you can deal with it. Suppressing your thoughts won’t help.

Example Negative Thought: Your nose is too big.

Ask yourself:

  • Why do you I think that?
  • Is this thought true?

Remember that many of our thoughts are influenced by our culture’s standards and other people’s ideas of an ideal image.

2. SPEAK TO YOUR THOUGHT

Tell your negative thought why it is wrong. List to yourself all the reasons why the negative thought is not true.

Example: Actually, my nose is not too big. If it were any smaller, it would be too small in proportion to my eyes, lips and the rest of my face. You cannot compare body features with other peoples because everyone’s body is unique. There is no ideal.

3. REPLACEMENT

Replace the negative thought with the positive and declare it true.

Example: My nose is perfect for my face. It was designed perfectly to fit me and this is true.

4. MANIFEST THE TRUTH

Now that you have replaced the thought, solidify it by saying the true statement aloud or by writing it out. Doing both will make it more powerful.

5. AWARENESS

Be aware of the negative mental attack you just experienced and be mindful of your thoughts. Never entertain a negative thoughts and lies longer than 1 minute. Your time and energy is better used for other productive things.

These steps should take no longer than 2 minutes total. If you find that this exercise some of the other positive body image strategies. The goal is to make a habit out of thinking positive. If this is practiced regularly, your mind will get into the habit of thinking positively and you will achieve a positive body image.
