Women Body Image: The Challenges in Body Image

I am very passionate when it comes to “women body image” because as an image consultant I work with women everyday teaching them to love their bodies. A study done by psychologytoday.com showed that 56% of the women surveyed were dissatisfied with their overall appearance and of those women surveyed 71% were unhappy with their overall body weight. In this article, I will discuss some of the challenges we encounter as women.

HORMONAL CHANGES

A young women’s will go through a lot of changes as it prepares for childbirth. Starting in our early teens, our estrogen levels will rise and with it, we are blessed with larger breast, hips and thighs. This is normal and apart of life! In no way are we to try to fight against this through dieting and exercise. Just embrace it!

Feed your mind only with positive images and messages that promote a healthy and normal body image. Consuming to much media (including television, movies, social media, print magazines etc.) will make you feel like your body is not the ideal. Stop it! See no evil. Do no evil. Do yourself a favor and screen your eyes!

PREGNANCY

During and after pregnancy, estrogen levels are at its peak as your body is ready to carry, deliver and nurse a baby. For almost 2 years your body will work (or has worked) to help your baby in healthy development. Common body changes during and after pregnancy include:

  • Larger breasts
  • Low hanging breasts
  • Wider hips
  • Fuller stomach and torso
  • Skin in the midriff is loose and soft
  • Overall body weight gain

Making a baby is a beautiful thing including the part where your body adapts to procreate. Don’t get it confused.

MENOPAUSE

As our estrogen levels go down, our fat deposits increase in our torso. We will also experience loss of firmness in our skin and muscles. The aging process is inevitable, so I won’t comment on how to stop it. However, if you really want to, you can address the signs of aging such as wrinkles, loss of firmness and a new body shape with several different skin care techniques, wardrobe solutions and of course healthy eating and exercise.

COSMETIC SURGERY?

Some women will consider cosmetic surgery especially after having children. As an image consultant and your electronic friend, I personally believe that you can achieve a high self-esteem and a positive body image without cosmetic surgery. Just understand that if you are seeking surgery make sure you are not doing it for someone else.

It’s also imperative that you choose a cosmetic surgeon who has an impecible reputation in the field, such as Dr. Johnny Franco. Explore your options before committing, read reviews of each surgeon, and try to find real-life examples of the work they have done.

CONCLUSION

Throughout life, we will gain weight, lose weight, get saggy, and look older. This is not the problem of course because this is the circle of life. Instead of focusing on your body and trying to conform it to an ideal, why not go along with your body’s story by painting a beautiful picture to go along with it. You can do this by providing a smile, clothes that flatter, and a beautiful attitude.
